Rupee falls to one-year low of 41.77/dollar

Resuming its slide against the greenback, the Indian rupee plunged to its more than one-year low of 41.76/77 against a US dollar.

Heavy demand for US currency in view of high oil prices continued modestly on its short supply.

The Interbank Foreign Exchange (Durex) market witnessed brisk trade with wide fluctuations in the local currency in a range of 41.55 and 41.79 during the day. The local currency lost 41 paise against the US counterpart.

Russian paper suspended

A Russian newspaper that printed rumours about President Vladimir Putin’s alleged affair with a beautiful young gymnast has been suspended from publication.

Last week the Moscow tabloid Moskovsky Korrespondent, which is owned by Russian billionaire-politician Alexander Lebedev, ran a story claiming the 55-year old Putin had secretly divorced his wife and was planning to marry Alina Kabayeva, 25, a Duma deputy and former Olympic gold medal winner.

One-year-old boy married to dog

A story of superstitious and blind faith, the family of a one-year-old boy married him off to a dog to keep him free from diseases all his life in Orissa's tribal-dominated Jagatsinghpur district.

The wedding was organised at Munda Sahi of Jagatsinghpur town, only 30 meters away from the district collector's residence.

District Collector Dr PK Meherda said that the incident could be the outcome of the tribal belief.

The family of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner on death row in Pakistan, has been issued visas in order to facilitate a meeting with the convicted Sikh in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.

A source in the Pakistan High Commission told HT that visas had been issued to Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, wife Sukpreet Kaur, brother-in-law Baldev Singh and daughters Poonam Atwal and Swapandeep Gill on Wednesday.
