Study shows 50% heart attacks seen in people younger than 45yrs Bangalore, Aug 15: A study conducted by a private hospital here has shown that more than 50 per cent of heart attacks are seen in people younger than the age of 45 years which includes women. The study labelled "Hare and Dare Programme" was carried out on 100 persons by Trinity Hospital and Heart Foundation for a year to compile data on heart disease risk factors and also find out reasons why young people of Bangalore face the threat of heart attacks. "Unfortunately we do not have any data of our own and we always had to depend on western data. To have a clear understanding and to know the exact incidence, the Trinity Hospital started this programme", the Hospital CMD, Dr B G Muralidhara told a press conference here. A total of 100 people with hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, smoking for the past five years and a family history of heart problems were subjected to the study. Surprisingly many of the persons who came under the study did not have any symptoms of heart disease, but had evidence of blocks in the arteries in heart as well as in blood vessels, which supplies blood to brain, kidneys and legs which is called as peripheral vascular disease. Of late women have taken to smoking in a big way, which would certainly push up the number of patients with cardiac ailments, he pointed out. The Hospital, the first in Karnataka to introduce 64 Slice Cardiac CT -- painless one minute angiogram procedure -- has performed 5,000 CT angiograms, Muralidhara said. Bureau Report
